Lagos, Nigeria, November 22, 2018 – As a multi-trillion Naira industry with tremendous capacity to employ more than 1million Nigerians annually, the Federal Government has been urged to develop the Print and Graphics Industry in Nigeria through collaboration with stakeholders particularly in Government quest to diversify the economy from oil.
Stakeholders under the aegis of CHANGE GROUP enjoined the government to critically look into the industry which imports into the country over 2 Million Metric Tons of paper valued at N720 Billion annually. According to the stakeholders aside importation of paper, Nigeria also loses when finished printed products that could easily be done locally such as educational books, security documents, election materials, packaging materials etc, are imported unabated. Also, non-availability of a national policy on printing has made the industry a no-go area for investment particularly in the pulp and paper sector. The resultant effects of these are; job losses, unemployment and an hemorrhaging industry.
It is against this backdrop that the stakeholders are organising one-of-its-kind 1ST NIGERIAN NATIONAL PRINTERS CONFERENCE (ngprint) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade & Investment to address these anomalies. With the theme: THE ROLE OF NIGERIA PRINTING INDUSTRY IN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT & EMPLOYMENT GENERATION, the 1ST NIGERIAN NATIONAL PRINTERS CONFERENCE will take place on Tuesday 27th of November 2018 at Ladi Kwali Hall, Sheraton Hotel, Abuja. Amongst others, the Conference is expected to showcase the potentials of the Printing Industry particularly in employment generation while also show case how to contribute to the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (EGRP) and the Nigerian Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP) of the Federal Government.
Other aims of the Conference:
- To use the upcoming election to bring the attention of Government to the importance and challenges facing an industry providing jobs for one out of every 20 working Nigerian outside the traditional farming business.
- How to halt the consistence loss of jobs in the industry.
- How to maximize the job creating potentials of the industry and ensure Nigeria jobs remain in Nigeria.
Several prominent industry stakeholders as well Government Officials have been confirmed to make presentations during the Conference. These include among others: Mrs. Folorunso Alakija – Vice Chairman, Digitalreality Prints LTD, who will chair the conference, industry giant, Alhaji Yahaya Amfani – Chairman, Yaliam Group of Companies, Professor J. E. O Abugu of the University of Lagos and representatives from both the Ministry of Trade & Investment and Ministry of Information.
The one-day Conference will spread into Panel Discussions with topics such as Revamping Pulp and Paper Production and Creating Employment in Nigeria; Forging a Synergy between the Procurement Act, the Electoral Act and the Executive Order 5 for Capacity Development in the printing Industry.
