With the theme: ‘Packaging-quality infrastructure for sustainable value chain’, the Institute of Packaging Ghana, (IOPG) is organising packaging summit in Accra to build synergies and join forces following a baseline situational analysis research (BUSAC sponsored) advocating for a National Packaging Policy to ensure effectiveness and sustainability for the sector in Ghana.
To be held at the Best Western Hotel, Airport Accra Ghana, the Packaging Summit 2014 is a two-day event that provides a platform for key stakeholders (from design to end-user) in the Ghanaian and West African packaging sector to share best practice, identify opportunities and prescribe sustainable solutions to the challenges confronting the industry in the sub region.
According to T. Kwesi Abaidoo, President of IOPG, the event will attract policy makers comprising government officials and heads of regulatory bodies, Chief Executives of packaging manufacturing firms, food processing and beverage producing companies, healthcare and pharmaceutical companies, cosmetic and beauty product manufacturers, printing, labelling and design companies.
Key topics to be covered at the Summit are materials sourcing challenges, cost effective packaging solutions, packaging design, quality and sustainability and the role of packaging as a brand extension.
The Summit aims to:
- Review of the policy, legal and regulatory framework with regards to packaging and analyze the existing regulatory regime and the effect on productivity and efficiency of the packaging industry in Ghana and West Africa
- Introduce international ideas, concepts and successes into West Africa to enhance the development of the industry and the implementation of best practice
- Create the environment for brand owners and packaging users who are key stakeholders to share their concerns, challenges and issues with their suppliers and packaging manufacturers
- Help the packaging industry to develop to its full potential in shaping and growing the consumer economies in Ghana and across the West African region
- Create the opportunity for peer-to-peer exchange, one-to-one meetings, discussions and debates for the packaging industry in Ghana and West Africa – the first of its kind.
The Summit will be followed by a week-long packaging training on Packaging: Quality Infrastructure for Sustainable Value Chain from September 29 to October 4, 2014. This training session is partially sponsored by the World packaging Organisation (WPO) and supported by the Africa Packaging Organisation (APO)
Working in collaboration with the Institute of Packaging of Nigeria, the Ghana Ministries of Trade and Industry, Food and Agriculture, Ghana Standards Authority, Ghana Export Promotion Authority, Food and Drugs Authority, packaging companies and brand owners, the outcome of the Summit is expected to fashion the way forward for the growth of the packaging sector in the West Africa sub region and beyond.
