Kodak Authorised Dealer in Africa – FC Exports Group Cycling Team (TeamFCG) member – Francis Amu Broni has won the 10th edition of the Ghana Road Cycling Championship race that pulled over 100 cyclists and more than 50 delegates from affiliate clubs across Ghana. This is the second consecutive win by TeamFCG member with the first by Naaba Michael in 2023.
The event which took place on Saturday 30th of November 2024 at Olebu Vicolis in Accra, Ghana brought together top cyclists from 26 clubs across the nation vying for the coveted national title and a shot at representing Ghana on the international stage. Five members of TeamFCG made up of Alex Quansah, Francis Amu Broni, Jacob, Maxwell Doku, and Naaba Michael took part in the National Championship.
It was two races with Individual Time Trial (ITT) of 24km with 2 laps; and the Road Race Criteria of 100km with 8 laps in various categories. While the ITT race started at 11am, the Road Race was at 2pm. The Road Race, according to the team, was fantastic, with the team sticking to their plan to work for Michael to defend his title at the onset. Until about 6 laps into the race when Francis charted his breakaway with another cyclist from the Graditors team following.
They rode for about 3 to 4 laps before other members of TeamFCG caught up with them. The team stood as a bunch and did not allow their opponent to breakaway. And so, at the last lap, about 6km to go, Francis made another solo move to breakaway and other cyclists tried to catch up with him. But the other four members of TeamFCG did not allow them, thus Francis kept going to the finish line to the take the coveted 1st position and become Ghana’s new champion. Alex and Maxwell took the 2nd and 8th positions, respectively.
Ghana Cycling Federation (GCF) President – Mohammed Sahnoon expressed his enthusiasm, highlighting the championship’s importance in the federation’s mission to nurture Ghana’s cycling talents. “The National Cycling Championship is a significant event for us as it embodies our mission to promote cycling and support the growth of our athletes. We are committed to nurturing top talent and elevating Ghana’s presence in the Africa and World of competitive cycling.”
