Ghana joins Benin, Gambia, Rwanda and Seychelles to welcome all African citizens visa-free in a bold, landmark initiative approved by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo towards achieving true Pan-African integration of free movement of persons that fosters economic integration across the continent.
Aligning with the aspirations of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) that engenders unity, economic, cultural, and social cooperation, this development has been commended far and wide as a forward-thinking initiative for Africa’s collective progress. For one thing, the visa-free policy enhances Ghana’s attractiveness as a travel and trade destination, solidifying its position as a hub in the subregion. On the other hand, it positions Ghana on a global scale as a major hub for trade and tourism with attendant multiplier effects on Ghana’s economy.
Accordingly, it is expected that the tourism industry will experience significant boost with increased patronage from African tourists. Again, other sectors in the hospitality, creatives/ entertainment, transportation, aviation and other tourism-related businesses will benefit from increased traveler influx, ultimately enhancing Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and global image. Not only that, the significant amount of trade between Ghana and other African countries will be further improved thereby strengthening local economies through job creation, improved quality of life, and increased tax revenue for national development.
Though the visa-free travel comes with operational, inter-governmental, and security implications as a result of increased border activity, it is believed that Ghana is able to handle any challenge that will arise from this laudable policy. It only needs robust border management systems, strengthened inter-agency coordination and collaboration that leverages technology to ensure safety without compromising the gains of the policy. In all, it is a win for Ghana and all must take advantage of the opportunities therein to network, collaborate, and establish businesses across Africa by forging stronger connections, enriching lives and building sustainable livelihoods.
